Does My Irrigation System Have Proper Coverage?

When visiting new or existing customers, our JB Lawn Sprinklers Irrigation Technicians will often be asked a variation of the question, “Does my irrigation system have proper coverage?” Homeowners clearly want to have an even distribution of water throughout their lawn. When your lawn doesn’t receive enough water, it can turn brown and eventually die due to lack of moisture. For the purposes of this blog, we wanted to walk homeowners and business owners through the ways JB Lawn Sprinklers Irrigation Technicians handle irrigation coverage and you independently can determine whether or not you have proper irrigation coverage.

JB Lawn Sprinklers Technicians Diagnosing Coverage

When a JB Lawn Sprinklers Irrigation Technician comes out to your home, we can complete a thorough inspection of your irrigation system. This includes your irrigation controller, spray heads and rotators, drip irrigation, pressure and water flow, zoning, potential upgrades and replacements, and much more.

Another aspect of the process is to diagnose coverage of the lawn. Technicians will run each zone individually and evaluate the coverage of the sprinkler system. Through visual observation and documentation, they are able to determine if the property has adequate coverage. The goal for the irrigation system is to have head-to-head coverage, which usually means double row head-to-head coverage. We look for sprinkler heads to be straight up and not crooked so water is not being blocked by grass, plants, or other objects. We look for pressure to be between 30 to 50 psi and water to be landing near or at the next sprinkler head.

As for beds, it’s very common to only see single-row coverage as this will suffice. Despite it being just single row coverage, the expectation is to have head-to-head coverage nonetheless.

If the lawn is properly covered, then no changes need to be made.

However, if the system has dry spots, the technician will draw up a revised irrigation plan to fix the existing issues. This could include brown areas that are not receiving enough water or patches of grass that are yellow due to overwatering.

From there, the technician will build a quote for the customer to move forward with those recommendations.

Another thing our technicians are looking for is that zones are set up to water plants with similar watering requirements. In other words, zones should only be watering turf or shrubs, but not both at the same time.

JB Lawn Sprinklers also offers irrigation maintenance agreements for homeowners and business owners. These maintenance agreements are available for biannual and quarterly options. These include quarterly visits for Winterization as we head into winter, Spring Turn-on services, and adjustments and maintenance throughout the year.
